South Dakota's Black Hills near the Wyoming border, provide awesome rides and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum has a selection of bikes on display, when bikers from all across the nation assemble in Sturgis, SD for the premier motorcycle event in United States. Mt. Rushmore provides historic grandeur, while Wind Cave NP and Jewel Cave National Monument add some underground adventure.
Future dates for the Sturgis Rally?
Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has something for just about everyone. Boulder Canyon (west toward Deadwood) and Vanocker Canyon (south toward Nemo) are don't miss scenic rides. Also try (A) Spearfish Canyon Hwy/US14 to Roughlock Falls Nature Area (B) 14 miles south of Spearfish, SD. See larger map with directions. You can check this link for South Dakota road construction. Rent a bike at Black Hills HD in Rapid City.
170 miles west on US Hwy 14 is the cowboy town of Sheridan, WY. The nearby, Bighorn Scenic Byway runs 59 miles across the Bighorn National Forest, from Dayton, WY to Shell, WY. Along the way check out Shell Falls. See large map with directions.
"The byway continues north from here until it meets up with Highway 14A, the Medicine Wheel Passage Scenic Byway at the Burgess Junction Visitor Center, another stopping spot complete with information, exhibits, an interpretive trail, and a theater. The highway also continues to Twin Buttes, Sibley Lake, Steamboat Rock, and spectacular views of Tongue River Canyon and the Sheridan Valley."
How do you like these twisty highways with 3 tunnels near (A) Mount Rushmore? See larger map with directions.
Southwest of Rapid City, Custer State Park has bison, and scenic drives like Needles Highway/Hwy 87 and Wildlife Loop Road. And check out those tunnels on Iron Mountain Road/Hwy 16 (above), the scenic route between Mt. Rushmore and Custer State Park. (please see the Custer SP Hwy pdf map for more details including the 6 tunnels)
About 7 miles west of Mt Rushmore, Hwy 244 takes you to Hwy 87, the scenic Needles Highway. You pass Custer State Park on the 38 mile ride to Wind Cave National Park, our eighth national park and home to one of the world's longest caves. (see larger map)
Mitchell, South Dakota, 75 miles east of Sioux Falls on I-90, is home to the Mitchell Corn Palace, an impressive structure covered with corn and other grains. I had lunch with Bill & Cheryl, riders from southern Wisconsin, who visited on a trip to Mt. Rushmore. There's even a Corn Palace Festival.
